Nordic Marriage Customs

When you are getting married in Scandinavia, it’s important to pay attention to some of the livelier cultures. We asked marriage organizer Mariella Gink to provide us the dirt on some of Sweden’s unique conventions.

Before couples in Viking occasions, the bride do take a bath to cleanse herself and figuratively wash apart her female. Then she would hop into cold liquid to reflect the move into woman. Her hair was also a big deal. She do sew it into complicated braids to depict her sexuality, and the more intricate her locks were, the better it boded for the couple. The brides swedish women for marriage would use a tunic and trousers made of wool or cloth. They do furthermore carry their swords.

In Norse traditions, it was common for couples to send each of their friends home with items. This is a convention that carries on today. It is common to see a product register at Swedish ceremonies, but it’s not the rule to obtain large monetary accomplishments, as most people can afford to get themselves a present.

After the ceremony, it’s time to enjoy! Swedish ceremonies are known for their lengthy, intricate dinner factions. The midnight may contain from eight to 12 remarks, screenings of clips from the bachelor and bachelorette parties, games and songs. A friend of the couple is usually designated master of ceremonies to coordinate all the entertainment.

Another quirky Scandinavian wedding tradition is that whenever the groom or bride leaves a room for any reason, other men will line up to kiss them. This is one of our favorite things to capture on camera as a photographer because it’s so funny!
